The microphone always listens in your native language, whatever you are learning. Vokabulo cleans the transcript with AI before it lands in the field, except when you are offline, where the raw text goes in as spoken.
The first time you tap it, iOS asks for the microphone and for speech recognition. If either is declined the button appears to do nothing, and the way back is through the iOS Settings app rather than through Vokabulo.
Tip
Using voice input is just so much more convenient than typing if your environment allows it.
