Vokabulo

What to use after Duolingo

Vokabulo vs Duolingo: your words, after the course.

Duolingo is a great way to start a language and keep a daily habit, and its biggest courses now reach B2. Vokabulo is built for what comes next: the words from your own work, conversations and interests, explained the moment you save them.

What really differs

Four differences, one by one.

Each one in the same order: how Duolingo does it, how Vokabulo does it.

01The words

Duolingo

Duolingo teaches the words its course has planned, unit by unit, for everyone learning that language. That is the right way to build foundations.

Vokabulo

Past the basics, the words you need are yours alone: the ones from your job, your city and your interests. In Vokabulo you save them as you meet them.

02The level

Duolingo

Duolingo’s nine most popular courses now teach up to B2. Before April 2026, most learners could only go as far as A2.

Vokabulo

Vokabulo starts where a course gets thin: from B1 onward, with the words you choose, as far as you want to go.

03The schedule

Duolingo

Personalised practice lessons bring back what you learned in the course and the mistakes you made.

Vokabulo

Every word you save gets its own FSRS schedule. Words you know come back less often; the ones that slip come back sooner.

04The feel

Duolingo

Streaks, XP, weekly leagues and hearts make practice feel like a game, and they work well for building a daily habit.

Vokabulo

Vokabulo keeps it calm: a daily streak, a leaderboard you can leave and no hearts to lose.

Price

What each one costs.

Duolingo

Duolingo is free with ads. Super Duolingo removes the ads and adds more practice options. On the US App Store it costs $83.99 to $119.99 a year or $9.99 to $12.99 a month, depending on the offer.

Vokabulo

Vokabulo is free to start. A free account is a full app, with limits on six features such as AI translations and Scenes. Vokabulo Pro removes the limits for $69.99 a year in the US, which works out at $5.83 a month.

For a free way to start a language, Duolingo is hard to beat. Vokabulo is worth paying for once the words you need are your own. Prices vary by country.

Using both

Many learners keep both.

Keep Duolingo for the daily lesson and the grammar, and use Vokabulo for the words your own life brings up: at work, in conversations, in the series you watch.

When a word from a Duolingo lesson matters to you, save it in Vokabulo as well. It gets an example sentence, usage notes and its own schedule.

Start with the next word you look up.

Vokabulo is free to start, on iPhone and iPad.
