I tapped the speaker and heard nothing. What now?

Short answer

Your phone is probably still connected to headphones in another room. Long-press any sound output icon to open the output selector and switch device.

Building "silent vocabulary" (words you can read but not speak) is a common trap. Avoid it by tapping the Speaker icon to hear the word spoken by our high-quality AI voices.

Two things worth knowing before you go hunting for a fault. Tapping the foreign-language text itself plays it, not just the speaker icon.

And the icon is not always a speaker: it changes to AirPods, headphones, a car or an AirPlay symbol depending on where the sound is currently going, which usually answers the question on its own.

There is a speaker button in the top bar of the Study tab that mutes all flashcard audio. With it off, the speaker icons vanish from the cards entirely, which reads as broken rather than muted.
