How do I start a study session?

Short answer

Open Study, choose how the session is measured (by cards or by minutes) and which words it draws from, then tap Start session at the bottom.

Under Session length you choose how the session is measured, depending on your mood:

By Cards: "I’ll do 20 words and then I’m done." Great for a quick fix.
By Minutes: "I have 10 minutes on the bus." Great for time-boxing.

Picking a value only sets it up. When your length and word selection look right, tap Start session at the bottom to begin.

Your preset is simply whatever you have set here. Vokabulo remembers your session length, tag filter and quiz settings, so the session card on Home can launch straight into them next time.

The presets are 10, 20, 50 and 100 cards, or 1, 3, 5 and 10 minutes, and each mode keeps its own last value, so switching back and forth does not reset anything. Any preset larger than your pool is dropped and replaced by a pill equal to the pool itself.

The Start button carries the number it will really use, capped at what you actually have, and when your filters match nothing it simply dims without an explanation. In Minutes mode, reaching 00:00 abandons the card on screen and takes you straight to the end screen.

Under the pills, a Your selection card splits your pool into Mastered, In training and Not yet studied. Mastered is Level 5, In training is Levels 1 to 4, and Not yet studied means never answered, so a word that lapsed back to the bottom counts as In training rather than new.

With no words at all in the pair the whole setup collapses to a single line and no Start button, which is a different state from filters that match nothing.

Tip

Leaving a session early costs you nothing. Every card you already answered keeps its level change, and if you answered ten or more they still count toward today’s streak.
